That’s where remote usability testing comes in.
Remote usability testing is the process of observing how users interact with your product while they’re in their natural environment, without needing to be physically present. It allows UX researchers and designers to gather feedback from real users, in real time, without the constraints of location.
But here’s the twist: not all “remote” testing is the same.
There’s remote usability testing, and then online remote usability testing. While the terms are often used interchangeably, here’s the nuance:
- Remote usability testing includes tests where the facilitator and user are not in the same place. It could be over the phone, through video conferencing, or recorded screen sessions.
- Online remote usability testing, on the other hand, specifically involves internet-based tools, like Maze, Lookback, or PlaybookUX, where the entire process (from recruitment to reporting) is run on digital platforms.
Now, why does this matter?

4 Types of Usability Test Questions That Work
Not all questions are created equal. And in usability testing, asking the wrong question is like giving someone a broken compass and expecting them to find the North Star.
Your questions guide the user experience of your product and the testing process itself. You’re not just gathering feedback; you’re setting the tone, steering the interaction, and framing the insights you want to extract.
- Screening questions: It targets whether the participant is right for this test. Before anything else, you want to ensure you’re talking to the right user. Screening questions help you filter participants based on demographics, behaviours, or experiences that match your product’s target audience.
- Pre-test questions: These are warm-up questions to know the assumptions and biases the user might have. They help you understand the user’s background, expectations, and familiarity with similar products. Pre-test questions create context for the test, so when they fumble later, you’ll know if it’s a usability issue or a skill gap.
- Task-based questions: The answers from the screening and pre-test will help you contextualise your task-based questions. This is the heart of your usability test. You’re giving users real tasks—like finding a feature, making a booking, or observing how they interact with your product. You’re not telling them what to click; you’re telling them what goal to achieve.
- Post-test questions: The usability test does not end at asking questions about the product. It’s time to reflect. Post-test questions help you gather impressions, emotions, and opinions—things you can’t always see during the test but are just as valuable. This is where users get to speak their truth, and you get to understand the why behind their behaviour.
Don’t Fall Into These Traps in Remote Usability Testing
Remote testing is convenient, but it’s not foolproof. It has its own traps that teams should watch out for. What are the traps?
- Technical fault: Remote usability testing is the brainchild of technology, and when tech fails, it is bound to fail as well. If the internet is shut down completely for a day, it will affect any activity that uses the internet.
What if you’re halfway through a crucial session, and boom—someone’s audio drops, the screen freezes, or the recording fails to save? That means your efforts are gone with the Wi-Fi wind. What to do? Hold on for the next part of the blog.
- Low engagement or distracted participants: Remote testing is very laid back and can be too relaxed, which opens the user up to many distractions. Participants can be scrolling Instagram on the side or zone out because there’s no facilitator physically present to re-engage them.
- Bias from poor task framing: Task framing has two sides: some researchers tend to underexplain, which will confuse the participant, while others tend to overexplain, which is too much for the user. You want to see what users naturally do, not how well they follow instructions, but balancing that can be a problem.
- Overlooking accessibility: Remote testing often centres around the regular users with no physical or psychological inability, but that’s a huge blind spot. Inclusive design starts with inclusive research. If your test environment or product isn’t accessible, you’re not just excluding users, you’re getting skewed feedback.
Quick Tips to Run a Smooth Online Usability Testing
It’s not enough to identify problems without solutions. These quick, proactive tips will help you avoid the usual pitfalls and be the best at remote usability testing.
Pre-test dry runs, test your test.
Don’t leave success to chance or over-depend on technology. Before involving actual participants, do a full test rehearsal with your team or a colleague. This helps catch unclear tasks, buggy links, audio issues, and awkward flows before they affect your data.
Use this dry run to test your screen recording, screen sharing, and backup tools, too. If tech breaks during the real session, you’re already prepared. Also, dont forget to share a quick troubleshooting guide in advance so users aren’t scrambling mid-session.
Clear instructions
Be as clear as if you are talking to a 5-year-old. Give participants human, friendly guidance, especially in unmoderated sessions. Keep it brief, avoid jargon, and tell them what to expect. If the test has high stakes, it’s better to opt for moderated sessions.
- For unmoderated tests, set time expectations (“This will take only 20 minutes”) and design bite-sized tasks.
- Include attention-check questions to catch disengagement early (e.g., “Please type the word ‘yes’ before moving to the next task”).
- Use stories or relatable scenarios to frame tasks. It makes them more natural and less biased.
Neutral observation
This is especially for unmoderated sessions. Don’t guide. Don’t hint. Just watch them. You are not judging whether they are wrong or right. So dont give the impression and avoid skewing behaviour. You want their instinct, not their obedience,
- Stick with scenario-based tasks.
- Avoid naming specific elements or paths, such as “Click the green button” or “Try using the search bar.”
If they get stuck, that’s the insight—not something to fix mid-test.
Accessibility considerations
Remote testing should work for everyone, not just the tech-literate or able-bodied.
Use platforms that support screen readers, keyboard navigation, and video captions. And include users with diverse abilities in your participant pool.
- Ask questions like “Was anything hard to navigate without a mouse?”
- Send pre-session tech checklists and allow alternative formats where needed.

Follow-up and insights logging
The test doesn’t end when the Zoom call does. Make space for a thoughtful post-test debrief for both participants and your team. You can send a survey and ask reflective questions like “What confused you most?” or “What did you expect to happen here?”

- Use a simple spreadsheet or a testing tool to track observations, quotes, and ratings by task.
Schedule buffer time
Even after you have planned properly for the remote usability test, set aside extra time for unforeseen events. Leave 10-20 minutes and add it to the time for the participant. It is better for the participants to finish early than late. Also, the participants were told that they could take a moment to think. Make them feel comfortable in their silence.
Record everything (with permission)
When you send out invites for the test, always let them know that it will be recorded and get their permission to do so. When the test is about to begin, remind them as well that the session will be recorded.
Recordings are your best when analysing patterns, showing stakeholders real behaviour, or referencing edge cases.
- Back up recordings to the cloud or locally, if the tool allows.
- Check audio/video clarity in your pre-test run.
Stay user-first
At every step, ask: How does this help the user feel heard, safe, and understood?
- Respect their time.
- Respect their feedback, even if it might not be the best
- Respect their pace.
